Verbitskaya Ludmila Alekseevna (1936 — 2019)
President of the Russian Academy of Education. President of the Russian Society of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature. Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Russkiy Mir Foundation. Deputy Chairman of the Society of Russian Literature. President of St Petersburg University.
Biography
Ludmila Verbitskaya was born in Leningrad. In 1958 she graduated from Leningrad State University with a degree in Russian Language and Literature. From then on all her professional activities are associated with the University. Starting her career as a department secretary, she went on to become a doctoral student, junior researcher, lecturer, senior lecturer and in 1979 a professor of the Department of Phonetics and Foreign Language Teaching Methods at the Philology Faculty. In 1985, LudmilaVerbitskaya became the Head of the Department of General Linguistics. In 1965 she was awarded a PhD in Philology and in 1977 a Doctor of Philology for her thesis, Contemporary Russian Literary Pronunciation: An Experimental Phonetic Study.
From 1984 she worked as a vice-rector for academic activities, a seniorvice-rector, and from May 1993 to April 1994, as an acting rector. In April 1994, she was elected rector of the University. On April 19, 1999 Ludmila Verbitskaya was re-elected to the same position. These years are a period of dynamic development of the University. She initiated the opening of two new faculties: the Faculty of International Relations and the Faculty of Medicine. In 2004 she was elected rector of St Petersburg Universityfor the third time. On February 18, 2008, following a proposal from the Federal Education Agency of the Russian Federation, the Academic Council of St Petersburg University elected Ludmila Verbitskaya St Petersburg University President. Since 2010 she has combined this position with that of the Dean of the PhilologyFaculty.
In 1995, she was elected a full member of the Russian Academy of Education and a member of the Presidium of the Academy’s North-West Branch. In 2013, she was elected President of the Russian Academy of Education.
Ludmila Verbitskaya is a Doctor Emerita of a number of Russian and foreign universities, including Bologna University, New York University, Soka University, Japan, Sookmyung University, Korea, the University of Chinese Culture, St Petersburg State Technical University, Academician I.P. Pavlov St Petersburg State Medical University, Yaroslav the Wise Novgorod State University, Voronezh University, Far Eastern State University, and Petrozavodsk State University.
Ludmila Verbitskaya is a member of the Council for Science and Education of the President of the Russian Federation; the Russian Language Council of the President of the Russian Federation; the Russian Language Council of the Government of the Russian Federation; the Council for the Development of Continuing Teacher Educationof the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the Accreditation Board of the Federal Service for the Supervision of Education and Science; the Scientific and Methodological Council for Textbooksof the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation; the Presidential Council for Protection of Citizens' Constitutional Rights of the Office of the President of the Russian Federation.
Ludmila Verbitskaya is a member of the Council of Rectors of the Northwestern Federal District; a co-chairman of the Association of Classical Universities of the Russian Federation, a co-chairman of St PetersburgGovernor’sRussian Language Council; an adviser to the Governor of St Petersburg on education, science and the media; a member of research and technology council under the governor of St. Petersburg and of the Public Council of St. Petersburg, as well as a member of the Commission for State Awards of the Governor of St Petersburg.
Ludmila Verbitskaya is a Deputy Chairman of the Coordination Committee of the Russian-German Forum, St Petersburg Dialogue.
Since 2015, Ludmila Verbitskaya has served as the chairman of the Federal Educational and Methodological Association in Linguistics and Literary Studies and the Federal Educational and Methodological Association for General Education.
To mark her achievements as a scholar, talented teacher, professor of St. Petersburg University L.A. Verbitskaya has been awarded numerous degrees and honours, including 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4thdegree Ordersfor the Service to the Fatherland; an Order of Honor; an Order of Friendship; an Order of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Holy Grand Duchess Olga, Equal-to-the-Apostles of the 3rd degree; an Order of the Russian Orthodox Church of St Efrosinia of the 2nd degree:an Order of the Legion of Honor, the highest award of France;a French Order of Academic Palms with the rank of Commander; a Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland; a Ukrainian Order of Princess Olga of the 3rd degree; a Badge of Honorary Worker of Higher Education of Russia; a medal For the Service toNational Health Care. She is a laureate of the Presidential Award in the field of education for 2001 and prizes of the Government of the Russian Federation for 2007, as well as a 1997 award of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust for achievements in higher education.
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) by the decision of the Committee on Small Bodies Nomenclature dated January 24, 2000 assigned the name of Verbitskaya to the small planet No.7451.
By the decision of the Legislative Assembly of St Petersburg on May 24, 2006, Ludmila Alekseevna Verbitskaya was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of St Petersburg.
Research Interests
Ludmila Alekseevna is the author of more than 350 scholarly publications in the field of Russian and general linguistics, phonetics, phonology and methods of teaching the Russian language. Her works on the problems of modern pronunciation laid the foundations of a new promising area of linguistics – the pronunciation norm and interference at the phonetic level. Speech norms, stylistics, vocabulary and semantics of the modern Russian language occupy an important place in Professor Verbitskaya’s research, in her speeches in the media, in the work of the Russian Language Council of the Government of Russia, and in many years of her work as part of the International Association of Teachers Russian Language and Literature (IATRLL). In 1999, she was elected President of the Russian Society of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature (RSTRLL) and in 2003 President of IATRLL. In 2007 she was elected to the position for a second term and in 2011 for a third term.
